How Do You Choose a Preschool?

1/31/2014

I remember back when my children were small and we decided it was time to look for a preschool.  There were some beginning criteria that I decided to use.  Was the location convenient?  Did the hours meet my needs?  Was the tuition fair and reasonable?  After I answered those questions, I was able to narrow down the search and choose my top contenders.

The first thing you should consider is the facility itself.  I recommend that you take a tour of the facility, and your child should come too!  How do you feel when you enter the preschool?  Do you feel welcomed? Does your child like it? Look around at the artwork on the walls, the toys in the bins.  Do the kids look like they are having fun there?  Does it seem organized and clean?

Perhaps the most important part of the tour involves the teachers.  Take some time to chat with the director and meet the staff.  Do they seem knowledgeable?  Do they feel approachable?  Are the children interacting with them? Ask whatever questions you want.  No question is too silly or too small.  Every parent has different issues, concerns or thoughts on what they want their child to get out of preschool.  A good Director and staff will welcome your questions and be happy to discuss your child and their specific strengths and areas for them to grow.

Remember, not every preschool will be able to meet every need.  It is a very personal fit, one that you have the luxury of choosing.  I always tell my families to go with what they feel in their heart is best for their child and their family.  They are very rarely wrong :)

I like your tip to take note of how a preschool interacts with the children there and how the children interact with the teachers. Since nobody knows your child better than you, you will be able to identify if a particular preschool will be a comfortable and good place for your child. It's important that you feel like the personality of the teachers will mesh well with your child so that you know they will be comfortable.

I think it is fantastic that the article recommends sitting down and talking with the teachers while you tour the preschool. After all, you will want to make sure that they have the proper qualifications and experience to teach your child. Fortunately, most teachers understand this concern and will happily sit down to talk with parents about the preschool.

My daughter will be starting preschool next year and I want to make sure that I choose a school she will love. You make a great point that I should talk to the teachers and get to know them. This way I can ask about their teaching style and experience working with kids. Plus, I can see if they are friendly and kind when working with children.

I liked that you mentioned you need to consider when choosing a preschool is the facilities itself. My husband and I are thinking about choosing a preschool for our kids, and we are looking for advice. I will recommend him to take a tour of the facility before he makes a decision.

I love that you talked about how the most important part of a preschool is the staff. My son is going to start preschool next year and I want to make sure he's prepared and calm to start. I'll be stopping by the school next week so he can meet the teachers and staff there.

I like that you said that it is a good idea to take a tour around the facility with your child to see if he feels comfortable attending the school. My daughter is soon to start preschool and she seems to be excited about it. I'm going to try and take a tour with her around the school and see how she reacts or thinks.

My wife and I have been thinking about finding a preschool for our child for a while, but we weren't sure how to choose the right one. I really like that you say to take some time to meet the staff. It would be nice to know that you get along with them.

My daughter Silvia is about to enter preschool, and I'm quite nervous about choosing a school for her. Thank you for this; I'll keep in mind to tour the whole facility so I can observe if the kids in the school are having fun and if it's organized. I better start looking around Jackson, so I can look for more options.

I liked that you mentioned when you are looking for a preschool you need to consider the facility itself. My brother is new in town, and we are looking for advice to help him find a preschool for his kids. I will let him know about the importance of inspecting the facilities of a potential preschool before choose it for his kids.
